On November 10, 2023, the NAU FESET community joined an open lecture by Dr. Paul Nataniel, a leading European specialist in landscape restoration. Paul Nataniel is the technical director of the international construction company GHD for contamination assessment and remediation. He chaired the working group that developed the draft ISO 18504:2017 standard on sustainable restoration.

Paul Nataniel is a member of the EU-China Land and Soil Panel (SEPLS), Chair of the UK National Brownfields Network, Director of SiLC Register Ltd, Land Quality Management Ltd and CABERNET (European Brownfield Network). He runs the popular Linkedin group Contaminated Land Management with over 4500 members from around the world.

Paul has more than 25 years of experience in consulting, teaching and research in contaminated land management, risk assessment and sustainable remediation of brownfields. On this day, Dr. Paul Nataniel gave 2 lectures on the geological preconditions for the formation of soil and sediment contamination in water bodies of various types.

The staff of the Department of Ecology conducts multidisciplinary research on the formation of principles and methods for restoring disturbed ecosystems with the involvement of external specialists and applicants, so the reports presented are extremely important for the successful planning of restoration work, including after military operations. At the same time, the lectures were also interesting for the general audience, as Dr. Paul Nataniel has a great scientific and practical experience and illustrated all his thoughts with a large number of real-life examples of environmental problem assessment, decision-making in the field of infrastructure construction and the choice of landscape restoration technologies in different parts of the world.
