On April 21 the Information Center for Human Rights of the Faculty of Law together with the Department of Theory and History of State and Law conducted a training on "The Protection of Child Rights Under Martial Law" (based on the international and national standards of child rights).

The event was organized for students in Kyiv and the regions of Ukraine.

The training was joined by:

- Iryna Sopilko, dean of the NAU  Faculty of Law;

- Olena Makeieva, director of the Human Rights Information and Education Center;

- Svitlana Golovko, Head of the Department of Theory and History of State and Law;

- scientific-pedagogical employees and first-year students of the faculty;

- schoolchildren (school # 154 and school # 159 of Kyiv, Stavyshche judicial and pedagogical lyceum, Krasnoslobidka school, Cherkassy school # 23.

"The Russian aggression in Ukraine was a great challenge and test for everyone, including children who were or still are in the war zone. The topic suggested for discussion today is very relevant because all of the rights of a child are violated during war: the right to life, the right to be with family and community, the right to health, the right to personal development, and the right to care and protection. These violations require legal regulation and protection by both national and international institutions." - opening the event noted the Dean of the Faculty.

The participants of the training have considered questions concerning the concept of human rights and the history of their origin, international and national documents, which are the legal basis for the protection of children's rights, the mechanism of protection of children's rights under martial law, etc. The teachers gave the students practical advice on how to protect their rights both in civilian life and in conditions of war. Interesting and informative were the speeches and presentations of the students, who actively joined in the discussion of the protection of children's rights.

"The war has changed the lives of millions of children, which will have long-term consequences for generations to come. Children are one of the most vulnerable groups growing up in war, protected by international humanitarian law and national legislation. But now children's safety, well-being and access to basic services are all under threat because of the ongoing horrific violence," said Olena Makeyeva.
