On May 16-20, 2016, a photo exhibition “I Survived Genocide” dedicated to the anniversary of the deportation of Crimean Tatars was held in the National Aviation University on the initiative of the Student Council at the Ministry of Information Policy.

History. The deportation of the Crimean Tatars began on May 18, 1944, when the deportees were given from a few minutes to an hour to pack the necessary things. Tatars were gathered from Bakhchisarai, Simferopol and Dzhankoy and the echelons with all inhabitants were sent to the east. By the end of next month 200 thousand people were moved from their land and houses.

Within a year of starvation, disease and exhaustion more than 30 thousand Crimean Tatars died. After some time, the Soviet regime resorted to leveling the historical memory of the Crimean Tatars and Crimean statehood. On June 25, 1946, Crimea Autonomous status was deprived of and turned into a usual region of the USSR, and for the next two years, more than 80% of the original Crimean names of their places were replaced by standard Soviet names.
